How to tune gears
I'm pretty comfortable at building tunes the are stable (handling wise) for my driving style but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing when tuning gears, I used to use the FM4 tuning calculator for this.
Anyone got any handy hints on what to do?

Re: How to tune gears
really difficult one this gt. i know this doesn`t help but it really is specific to each car. some things to take into account are where`s the peak power, is it a lazy engine or a screamer, short sprint track or long straights, lots of power with back end kicking out lengthen gears/lower fd and so on.
do not use the in game calculator, it doesn`t work! i`ve seen quite a few threads regarding this in game info and people saying about best 0-60, point?!?! ok for drag maybe, useless for circuit racing.
some examples of past gearing for specific cars;
panoz - real lazy engine and liked long gearing, balanced out with a very high final drive (above 5 think it was).
evo 6 - tuned for sprint (sebring), 4wd boosted engine so short gears as drivetrain gave traction and short gears keeps turbo on boost.
one real simple way of tuning gears and this can be done without even testing is to basically aim to get a nice curve/arc of the gear length representative lines. this will work as a general rule on any car. from here you can then do a few laps of any track and tweak the gears to favour that track.
for me to get those few tenths out of a car i always feel that if i go back to the gears they usually can be achieved there but it`s the process that always takes the longest.
also cars that have high bhp/torque can get away with excessively long gears, vice versa low power somewhat need short gears to get them moving/accelerating.

that`s off top of me head and hope some of that helps. wont the fm4 calculator still work for f5? no difference in gearing between the games.

Cheers Si, how do you view the power curve? Yeah was going to give the tuning calculator a go, but call me blind but I can no longer find half the information you used to put into it
